FAQs

How long does my hair need to be to get Dreadlocks?

This depends on your natural hair type and style. Ideally, you will have a minimum of 10-15 cm hair growth for natural dread installation.

How often do I need to have dreadlocks maintained?

At the beginning of your dreadlock journey, it is recommended that you make an appointment for maintenance after 4-6 weeks (post-installation) until they’re at least 6 months old. Most mature dreads need regular maintenance every 3-6 months after that.

The frequency of dread maintenance depends on personal style and preference, lifestyle, and at-home maintenance. If you regularly wear a helmet, hats, tie them up, or swim often, you may need more frequent appointments for maintenance. You will receive care instructions after your first appointment.

What are blunted tips?

Blunted tips (aka rounded ends), are created when the hair is pushed back up into the dread – having these ends will result in losing a little bit of length in new locs. They are also prone to dread rot and funky smells due to the difficulty in keeping them dry.

Can you wash Dreadlocks?

Absolutely! Dreadlocks should be washed regularly- most dreadheads wash once a week. After dreadlock installation, you will be given full aftercare advice about washing your new locs. I recommend you keep them dry for the first 1-2 weeks before washing with a residue-free dreadlock shampoo, making sure that they dry fully between washes.

Why is my scalp itchy?

With your new style, comes a new scalp experience. Your scalp needs time to adjust to the tightness of the dreads, less stimulation from no longer needing to brush/comb and a change in hair care products. Everyone’s scalp is different, so products will do different things for different people. This means it is important to find the best product for your locs. VALHALLA HAIR stocks a range of natural dread care products and can also recommend inexpensive supermarket products- I offer the best advice for choosing the right product for your needs.

Another reason why you may be itchy are due to those freeloader bugs! Yes, LICE! You can get nits when you have dreads, and they can be treated. Using a nit treatment product that doesn’t require brushing/combing, and washing every few days to stop the nit cycle is best.

Can I dye my dreadlocks?

Yes, it is possible, but it is not ideal to dye your own dreads. I advise keeping dying of human-hair dreadlock extensions to a minimum- ask me how I know haha. Bleaching increases the risk of hair breakage and damaging your locs. However, if you choose to dye your locs, be sure to rinse ALL products out completely.

Synthetic dreads and extensions can not be dyed.

What is the difference between human hair and synthetic hair extensions?

To an untrained eye, it can be hard to see the difference.

Human hair is softer, more pliable and behaves as natural hair does which makes it ideal for blending with your own hair. Human hair can be dyed and blow-dried. This makes it the best choice for a more natural look and feel.

Synthetic hair offers a seamless look, blending with your natural hair. It is lightweight, comes in a wide range of non-fade colours, cannot be dyed, and is a great option for those wanting great-looking dreads on a budget.
