  • DREADSCHOOL FAQ – Weaving Knowledge & Fate Through Dreadcraft

    HOW DO I START DREADLOCKS?

There are many paths to beginning your dreadcraft journey—from letting your hair naturally form into freeform locks to creating structured sections using techniques like crocheting.

    🕯️ Your options:
🔹 Learn to DIY by enrolling in a DREADSCHOOL Training Course or watching tutorials.
🔹 Seek guidance from a qualified loctician or dread artist to help shape your vision.
🔹 Let your hair freeform, embracing the natural journey of locking over time.

Your dreadlocks are a reflection of your journey—choose the method that resonates with you.

CAN ANYONE GET DREADLOCKS, OR IS A SPECIFIC HAIR TYPE REQUIRED?

Yes! All hair types can be locked—dreadlocks do not belong to one singular culture, nor are they exclusive to a specific hair type.

🌿 Since the dawn of time, hair has knotted naturally, long before brushes and combs existed. Some textures lock faster than others, but with the right techniques, anyone can weave their fate into their locks.

If you prefer a professional touch, finding a loctician familiar with your hair type can be helpful.

HOW LONG DOES MY HAIR NEED TO BE BEFORE STARTING DREADLOCKS?

The ideal starting length for natural dreadlocks is 10-15 cm (or as long as your jawline).

🌿 If your hair is shorter, your locks may initially stand up until they gain length and weight. Extensions can also be added for instant length while your natural hair grows into its own locks.

DO DREADLOCKS REQUIRE A LOT OF MAINTENANCE?

🌙 The first year is key to shaping your locks. Until they reach maturity (typically after 12 months), they need regular care to help them form well.

🔹 Early stage (0-12 months) – Maintenance every 6 weeks to 3 months ensures locks stay structured and strong.
🔹 Mature stage (1+ year) – Less frequent maintenance is needed. Simple habits like separating at the roots prevent locks from merging.

💡 Listen to your locks—maintain them when they need it, and embrace their natural evolution.

CAN I WASH MY DREADLOCKS? HOW OFTEN?

A common misconception is that dreadlocks should never be washed—but healthy locks start with a clean scalp.

🌿 Wash at least once a week with a natural, residue-free shampoo. Avoid conditioners as they soften hair, preventing proper locking.
🌙 Golden Rule: Always fully dry your dreadlocks before bed—damp locks can lead to mildew buildup.

    WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I USE?

Not all hair products are dread-friendly. Many commercial shampoos leave residues that can build up in your locks over time.

    Look for:
🔹 Natural & organic dreadlock shampoos
🔹 Products free from sulfates, parabens & silicones (avoid ingredients ending in “-cone” or “-conol”).

🌿 Recommended brands: DREADLOCKS SOCIETY, DREADLOCKS NATURALLY, and RAW ROOTS—crafted with botanical ingredients to nourish both your locks and scalp.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR DREADLOCKS TO FULLY MATURE?

Dreadlocks evolve over time, passing through different stages of development:

🌱 Baby Locks (0-6 months): Loose, frizzy, still forming.
🌿 Teen Locks (6-12 months): Starting to compact, but still soft.
🌙 Mature Locks (12-24 months): Tight, structured, and settled into their final form.

Patience is key—dreadlocks are a journey, not an instant result.

CAN I COLOUR, BLEACH, OR DYE MY DREADLOCKS?

Yes! But with care. Bleaching and chemical dyes can weaken hair, especially in locked form.

🌿 If you want to color your dreadlocks, consider:
Henna or plant-based dyes for a natural, non-damaging approach.
🌙 Deep hydration treatments before and after coloring.
🔹 If bleaching, work with a professional to prevent over-processing.

HOW DO I PREVENT DREADLOCKS FROM UNRAVELLING?

🌿 Loose hair is natural, but you can guide your locks with:
🔹 Regular palm rolling (for structured locks)
🔹 Separating sections to prevent merging
🔹 Using a crochet hook for reinforcement (if needed)

Let your locks breathe and evolve, but guide them as they grow.

ARE DREADLOCKS PERMANENT? CAN THEY BE REMOVED?

Dreadlocks are not necessarily permanent—but removing them takes time and patience.

🌙 If they are fresh (a few weeks old), combing them out is easier.
🌿 If they are mature (1+ years old), they can still be removed, but it requires deep conditioning, patience, and detangling techniques.

For a temporary option, install braid-in dreadlock extensions—they offer the look without commitment and can be removed anytime.

DO DREADLOCKS SMELL? HOW DO I PREVENT ODOR?

Dreadlocks do not naturally smell—but improper care can lead to buildup.

    Tips to prevent odor:
    🌿 Wash regularly with a residue-free shampoo.
🌙 Dry thoroughly after washing—damp locks = mildew risk.
🔹 Use light essential oil sprays (lavender, tea tree, peppermint) to keep locks fresh.

    CAN I SWIM WITH DREADLOCKS?

    Yes! But protect your locks:

🌊 Saltwater & chlorine can dry out dreadlocks—rinse thoroughly after swimming.
🌿 Wear a swim cap or braid your locks for added protection.
Deep condition after frequent exposure to salt or chlorine.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY SCALP ITCHES?

Itching is common during the early locking phase but can be eased with:

🌿 Aloe vera gel – Soothes irritation naturally.
🌙 Essential oil sprays (tea tree, rosemary, peppermint) to cleanse & cool the scalp.
🔹 Hydration – Drink plenty of water to support scalp health.

CAN I STYLE MY HAIR WITH DREADLOCKS?

Absolutely! Dreadlocks can be styled in endless ways:

🌿 Updos, braids, buns, beads, and wraps can all be woven into your look.
🌙 Accessorize with cuffs, shells, or charms for a unique aesthetic.
Experiment with half-up, half-down styles, or twists—locks are just as versatile as loose hair!

    ARE DREADLOCKS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION?

Dreadlocks have existed in many cultures across history, including African, Norse, Indian, and Polynesian traditions. While some cultures have deep spiritual ties to locks, dreadlocks themselves do not belong to a singular culture—they are a natural formation of hair across humanity.

💡 The most important thing? Respect the cultures that have long honored dreadlocks, understand their history, and wear them with knowledge, care, and reverence.

  • The Legacy of Lokkr: Weaving Strength, Spirit & Fate

Dreadlocks—known to the Norse as "lokkr"—are more than just a style. They are woven into history, carrying the strength, resilience, and spirit of those who came before us. Like the flowing currents of a mighty river, each lock twists and turns, forming a path of identity, endurance, and transformation.

In ancient Norse culture, dreadlocks were both practical and symbolic—worn by warriors who faced the raw elements of the North. It was believed that the strength of one’s lokkr reflected their inner power and connection to the divine.

Yet, the story of dreadlocks does not belong to any one culture, one land, or one people. Across continents and throughout time, dreadlocks have been woven into the traditions of many civilizations—from the fierce Viking warriors of Scandinavia to the wise sages of India, the spiritual Rastafari movement of Jamaica, and beyond.

Each culture has brought its own meaning, reverence, and artistry to the craft of dreadlocks. They have been worn as symbols of devotion, rebellion, resilience, and identity—a testament to the unbreakable spirit of those who wear them.

As we continue to embrace the art of dreadcraft, we do so with honor, awareness, and respect—recognizing that dreadlocks are more than a trend. They are a living history, a sacred practice, and a deeply personal journey.

🌙 May we weave our own fates with intention, carrying the wisdom of the past into the future.

  • Preparing for the Sacred Rite of Dreadcraft

Ah, the sacred moment before transformation begins—the first step in weaving your fate into lokks that will carry your journey forward. To begin your path into the art of dreadcraft, proper preparation is key. 🌿✨

    1. Seek Knowledge Before You Weave

Before your hair is twisted into its new form, take the time to arm yourself with wisdom.

🌙 Will you seek the guidance of a loctician, or weave your own fate?
🔮 Have you explored different methods of dread formation?
📖 Do you understand the care, maintenance, and evolution of dreadlocks?

Dreadlocks are a commitment to transformation—both physically and spiritually. The more you know before you begin, the stronger your foundation will be.

    2. The Length of Your Journey Matters

Your hair must be at least 10 cm (or chin-length) to begin its transformation. The longer the strands, the more solid the foundation.

🌿 Shorter lokks may stand tall at first, wild and untamed, before gravity and time guide them downward.
🌙 Longer hair offers an easier transition, forming more naturally into woven strands of strength.

Patience is part of the journey—each lock will settle in its own time.

    3. Cleanse & Purify Before the Ritual Begins

Before you embark, ensure your hair is cleansed of all that no longer serves it.

🔹 Wash your hair with a residue-free shampoo to remove buildup.
🔹 Cease using conditioner at least 4 weeks prior to allow your hair’s natural texture to emerge.
🔹 If possible, bathe in the ocean’s salt water—nature’s own cleansing elixir—to dry and prepare your strands for the locking process.

Your hair must be free, unburdened, and ready to take form in its new shape.

    4. Embrace the Virtue of Patience

Dreadlocks are not an instant creation—they are woven over time, shaped by experience, and strengthened by care.

    🌿 Trust the process.
    🌙 Honor the journey.
🔮 Know that your lokks will evolve, as will you.

You stand on the threshold of a transformation both seen and unseen. Prepare well, step forward with intention, and let the sacred craft of dreadlocks shape not only your hair—but your path.

May your lokks be woven with wisdom, and your journey be one of purpose.

  • The Sacred Weaving of Lokks: Choosing Your Path

The noble art of dreadlock creation is a journey of patience, technique, and transformation. Like the great weavers of fate, you must choose your method wisely, for each path leads to a different outcome, each lock formed by intention and skill.

Here are the sacred techniques of dreadcraft, each carrying its own strengths and characteristics:

🕯️ BACKCOMBING – The Structured Path

For those who seek a swift and disciplined formation, backcombing compacts strands of hair by combing them backward to create tight, structured lokks. However, beware—this method can cause significant length loss as the hair condenses into its new form.

🌿 TWIST & RIP – The Wild Weave

For seekers of a more organic and textured journey, twisting (also known as “twist & rip”) manually separates and knots the hair, forming lokks that evolve naturally over time. While this method allows for a free-spirited, untamed appeal, be mindful—it may lead to breakage, loops, and uneven textures along the way.

🌙 INTERLOCKING – The Loop of Continuity

A method in which the dreadlock is looped through its own base, creating tight, compact lokks—but only for those with coily or afro-textured hair. For others, this technique can weaken the dreadlock structure, creating gaps and long-term damage. Proceed with caution.

    🔮 CROCHET – The Artisan’s Touch

A method of intricate precision, the crochet technique tightens and shapes loose hair by forming knots from the inside out using a fine crochet hook. This practice yields neat, well-groomed locks, making it an ideal choice for those who prefer a structured yet natural appearance.

✨ SISTASYSTEM – The Woven Craft

A meticulous method of gentle backcombing combined with delicate weaving, where loose hairs are carefully wrapped around the dreadlock shaft using a crochet hook. The Sistasystem produces cylindrical, uniform locks, ensuring minimal shrinkage and no hair breakage, allowing the lokks to remain strong, straight, and enduring.

🌀 FREEFORM – The Unbound Path

For those who honor nature’s own way, freeform (or neglect) allows dreadlocks to shape themselves over time, untouched by external methods. This path embraces the raw, untamed beauty of natural formation, requiring only patience and devotion.

🔥 PERMING – The Cursed Alchemy

Once a common practice in the 90s, this method used chemical perm solution to force hair into clumped shapes, later waxed and hardened. However, permed "dreads" are not truly locked—they remain fragile and can be pulled apart with ease, having been stripped of their natural integrity. A path best left in the past.

🌳 BRAIDING / MATLOCKS – The Interwoven Foundation

For those who seek a heavily textured evolution, braiding strands together creates a strong foundation for dreadlocks to form over time. Though the process is slow, the outcome is a rugged, uniquely woven structure, rich with texture and depth.

🔮 Choose Your Method, Weave Your Fate

Your method of creation sets the foundation for your journey—will you craft with precision, weave with nature, or surrender to time?

🌙 No path is wrong, only different. Let your dreadcraft reflect your essence, and may your lokks be woven with strength, wisdom, and intention.

Your journey has begun. Trust the process.

  • The Sacred Art of Sectioning: Weaving the Foundation of Your Lokks

Hail, seeker of dreadcraft mastery! As you embark on this fateful transformation, heed well the wisdom of sectioning—a sacred art that lays the very foundation of your dreadlocked journey. Many an eager soul has rushed forth, only to find themselves entangled in the chaos of uneven growth and unruly maintenance.

Know this: the way you section your hair today will shape the very essence of your dreadlocks for years to come. Each section dictates the direction, thickness, and maturity of your lokks, and like the weaving of fate itself, once set in motion, it is not easily undone.

🌿 As a guiding principle, dreadlocks will naturally expand to about half the size of the section they originate from. Choose wisely, for this is the blueprint of your future mane.

    The Patterns of Fate

In the weaving of dreadlocks, two sacred patterns stand as beacons upon this path:

🔹 The Brick Pattern – A method of structure and balance, where sections are staggered like the stones of an ancient stronghold. This formation allows even weight distribution, reducing tension on the scalp.

🔺 The Triangle Pattern – A pattern of fluidity and movement, where each section is shaped to flow effortlessly with the hair’s natural parting. Triangles allow for a more organic aesthetic, granting each lokk a unique path as it forms.

Once, we walked the path of bricks, before the elegance of triangles revealed itself as the superior tapestry of fate. Whichever pattern calls to you, let it be a reflection of your journey to come.

    The Tools of the Craft

As any skilled artisan knows, the right tools are the key to precision. Choose your instruments well, for they shall be your allies in the shaping of your lokks:

⚔️ The Rat-Tail Metal Comb – A tool as sharp and precise as a Viking blade, ensuring clean, defined sections for an impeccable foundation.

🖤 Hair Clips Over Rubber Bands – While some bind their sections with rubber bands, we favor the gentler touch of hair clips. Rubber bands may tangle, pull, and stress the scalp, while clips allow for ease and adaptability as you move through the process.

✂️ The Sacred Scissors – A pair of fine nail scissors, should you need to liberate strands caught in the wrong section.

🌿 A Steady Hand & Intention – More than tools, the energy you bring to the process shapes the final outcome. Move with care, work with patience, and trust the rhythm of your own hands.

Weaving the Threads of Your Dreaded Destiny

Let the art of sectioning be an act of intention, woven in harmony with your hair’s natural flow. A strong foundation leads to ease in maintenance, and a thoughtful beginning ensures an effortless evolution.

🌙 May your sections be as strong as shields, as fluid as a river, and as destined as the fates themselves.

The path of dreadcraft awaits—walk it with wisdom.

  • Valhalla Hair Aftercare Guide

Welcome to Valhalla, where only the bold wear their locks with pride. This guide was forged for those who’ve chosen crochet, backcombing, or freeforming to craft their dreadlocks. It’s built for warriors — our clients — after their first installation or maintenance session.

If you’ve joined the Valhalla clan, we strongly recommend reading this guide in full. Consider it part of your battle prep — knowledge is your strongest weapon.

    Aftercare Overview

    • Question all advice from outsiders. There’s no shortage of poor guidance — especially from mainstream hair salons or contradicting information on the internet.

    • Wash your lokks once per week using a shampoo from our SHAMPOO GUIDE.

    • Separate your dreadlocks at the roots to keep them from merging into one.

    • Palm roll damp dreadlocks during the first 6 months — but only if you want to tame bumps and fuzz.

    • Crochet with care. Maintenance on mature dreads every 2-3 months is plenty. More than once a month is overkill.

    • Steer clear of over-maintenance, wax, conditioners, rubber bands, bleach, and questionable products.

    INTRODUCTION

This aftercare guide was forged for all warriors who choose the crochet, backcomb, or freeform path. Though it applies to many, it’s built with Valhalla Hair clients in mind — after I’ve installed, extended, or maintained your warrior locks.

Read it well. It holds the knowledge you’ll need to honor your hair and let your dreadlocks thrive.

    Beware of Bad Advice
There’s no shortage of self-proclaimed experts — from clueless salons to random YouTubers speaking only from their personal experience. Many ignore the wide range of hair types and methods. This ignorance causes more harm than good.

At VALHALLA HAIR, I’ve built my reputation by fixing what others ruin. Trust the professionals who have been professionally trained and work with dreadlocks every day, not those who only work on their own hair.

    Products — Choose Wisely
The products you use will either strengthen your locks or curse them.

We’ve crafted a SHAMPOO GUIDE further down to explain what to look for and what to avoid. Until then, trust this short list of recommended shampoos.

    0-6 Months — Early Stage

    • Redwins Tea Tree Shampoo

    • Products from the recommended shampoos

    • Wash no more than 1 once per week.

    6+ Months — Mature Locks

    • Continue with recommended shampoos.

    • Avoid mainstream products (besides tea tree shampoo) at all costs.

What to Avoid — Enemies of Healthy Locks
Baking Soda (Except in Deep Cleanses or detoxes)

It’s harsh. It strips natural oils and weakens hair. Use only during proper deep cleanses 3-4 times per year— never as a regular wash.

    Cheap Shampoos
Most contain residues that build up inside your locks. Stick to the trusty old Tea Tree or Valhalla-approved shampoos in the SHAMPOO GUIDE.

    Conditioners
Conditioner fights the natural knotting process — the very heart of your locks. Leave it out of your routine.

    Wax
Whether beeswax or any other kind, wax is a trap. It holds moisture, slows locking, and invites mold — the dreaded dread rot.

The Wash Routine — Honor the Process
Clean dreadlocks lock faster, tighter, and healthier. Let go of the myth that clean hair can’t knot — it’s the opposite.

    How Often to Wash

    • 0-6 Months: Once per week.

    • 6-12 Months: 1-2 times a week.

    • 1 Year and Beyond: Weekly or bi-weekly.

Let your locks fully dry between washes. Thick mature locks may take up to 3 days to fully dry. Younger locks dry quicker.

    Washing Mistakes to Avoid

    • Don’t wash daily or every other day.
Locks need time to fully dry. Constant dampness leads to mildew.

    • Don’t wait months to wash.
Too much sebum and oil buildup will suffocate your scalp.

    • Don’t scrub your scalp aggressively.
Gentle is the way. Treat your locks like a sponge — squeeze the shampoo in and out.

    • Don’t go to bed with wet dreads or you will wake up smelling like a wet dog! This sour smell can be very difficult to remove.

Deep Cleanse — A Ritual for Purity
Every 3-4 months, perform a deep cleanse or detox to strip away built-up oils and residues. Our Dread Cleanse Guide further down will walk you through the ritual.

Maintenance — Tend to Your Locks
New locks need care to settle and mature. Follow these steps to keep them strong:

    Separate After Every Wash

    • Pull apart any merging locks.

    • Left unchecked, they’ll fuse together beyond saving and will need professional maintenance to reform them.

Palm Roll (First 6 Months Only)

    • Only if you want smoother locks.

    • Roll damp locks after washing.

    • Don’t obsess — Once per week after your wash is enough.

    Avoid Over-Maintenance

    • Palm roll sparingly.

    • Root rub no more than twice a month.

    • Crochet no more than once a month.

Too much interference weakens the hair and creates brittle locks.

What to Avoid — The Enemies List

    Lint — The Silent Curse

    • Avoid wool and cotton materials— they embed into locks.

    • Use satin or silk materials instead.

    Natural Water Bodies

    • Lakes, ponds, and rivers can hide microscopic threats.

    • If you swim in them, do a deep cleanse after.

    • Beach or ocean water is totally ok and highly recommended.

Baking Soda — Use with Respect

    • Only use for deep cleanses, followed by apple cider vinegar rinses.

    Rubber Bands

    • They can be useful short-term (less than a week), but they cause weak spots if left too long.

    Scissors & Cutting Loops

    • Never cut loops or bumps. They’re part of the process.

    • Crocheting or patience will tame them.

    Interlocking — A Risky Shortcut

    • Interlocking can split roots, create weak spots, and give locks a braided look instead of natural knotting.

    • We strongly advise against it.

    Bleach & Harsh Dyes

    • Bleach weakens the hair.

    • If you must color, only dye the outer surface and rinse thoroughly.

Extra Tips — Secrets of the Strong

    Sea Salt — Nature’s Tightener

    • Ocean swims and sea salt soaks help locks tighten.

    • Skip overpriced sea salt sprays — they only coat the surface.

    Beads for Loops & Bumps

    • Place beads over stubborn loops.

    • Leave beads in for 2-4 weeks for best results.

    String Wraps for Fuzz Control

    • Criss-cross Wrapping string down fuzzy locks can help tame them.

    Sleep Protection

    • Wear an acrylic beanie, dread sock, or satin bonnet to protect your locks while you sleep.

    Final Words

Your dreadlocks are more than hair — they’re a reflection of patience, care, and strength. Honor them, protect them, and let them grow into something worthy of Valhalla.

If you have any questions or need guidance, the gates of Valhalla Hair are always open!

  • The Sacred Rites of Dreadcraft Maintenance

Hail, seeker of dreaded wisdom and fate-weaving mastery! Attend closely, for I shall impart the sacred rites of maintaining your lokks—a practice not of vanity, but of devotion. Dreadcraft is an art, a ritual, and a journey—each step shaping your locks as time shapes destiny.

    🌊 The Ritual of Cleansing

Washing your dreadlocks is an act of renewal, a purification of both hair and spirit. Use a residue-free, natural shampoo to remove buildup and stagnation, allowing your locks to remain light, fresh, and unburdened.

🕯️ Wash at least once a week—let it be a moment of intention, an offering to the journey your locks have undertaken.

☀️ The Drying & Binding of Energy

After cleansing, your locks must be fully dried—dampness invites unwanted forces such as mildew and odor.

🌙 Let the sun’s light embrace your locks or use gentle airflow to banish excess moisture.

A lock left damp is a lock weighed down. Let them breathe.

    🌿 The Offering of Hydration

Like the roots of Yggdrasil, your locks require nourishment to remain strong and thriving.

✨ Keep your scalp balanced with:
🔹 Essential oils (rosemary, tea tree, lavender)
🔹 Rose water & aloe vera
🔹 Natural dreadcare free from silicones, parabens, and sulfates

    A well-hydrated lock is a resilient one.

🔮 The Ritual of Root Vigilance

As your locks evolve, new growth will emerge untamed—guide them with care.

    🛠️ Techniques for maintenance:
✔ Crochet method – to secure loose strands and refine shape.
✔ Palm rolling – to encourage smooth, even form.
✔ Root separation – to prevent unwanted merging and preserve the individual path of each lock.

Your locks will shift and evolve—maintain them with patience, not force.

    🌀 The Sovereignty of Separation

As each thread of fate is distinct, so too must your locks remain separate.

✨ Regularly check for mingling roots and gently pull apart any bonds that form—lest they entwine into unintended unions.

Each lock holds its own journey—respect their independence.

    ⚠️ The Caution Against Constriction

Beware the urge to bind your locks too tightly—for tension leads to weak roots, thinning, and breakage.

🕯️ Tight does not mean strong. Let your locks flow freely when possible, allowing them to move with the energy of your being.

🌙 Nightly Protection for the Dreaming Weaver

As you step into the realm of dreams, guard your locks from the unseen forces of friction and strain.

🔹 Wrap them in silk or satin to preserve their strength.
🔹 Lay them upon a satin pillowcase, where they may rest undisturbed.

    A well-protected lock awakens renewed.

    🕯️ Ritual Gatherings for Strengthening

Every 3-6 moons, gather with a fellow weaver of dreadcraft—your loctician—to reinforce the foundation of your locks.

    ✨ Together, you may:
🔹 Tighten loose strands through crochet or re-twisting.
🔹 Strengthen weakened sections to prevent breakage.
🔹 Honor the ongoing evolution of your locks.

A true weaver of dreadcraft knows that care is an act of devotion.

    💀 Beware the Malevolent Elixirs

🛑 Beware of the potions laced with deception—the waxes, the artificial binders, the harsh sulfates.

A wise weaver avoids ingredients that:
⚠️ End in “-cone” or “-conol” (silicones).
⚠️ Contain parabens, sulfates, or petroleum-based residue.

✨ Instead, seek the pure botanicals, the sacred oils, and the elixirs that nourish rather than burden.

🌊 The Blessing of the Elements

While some forces of nature must be guarded against, ocean water is a gift to your locks.

✔ Saltwater tightens, strengthens, and purifies.
✔ The sea has long been a weaver of dreadcraft—let its magic serve your journey.

🌿 Live in Harmony with Your Locks

Your locks are an extension of your energy, a woven reflection of your path. To uphold their strength:

🌙 Nourish your body—for healthy hair begins within.
    🌊 Stay hydrated—water fuels vitality.
🕊️ Release stress—what burdens the mind, burdens the hair.

✨ May Your Lokks Be Woven with Strength & Intention

Let your dreadcraft be a living ritual, a sacred practice of care, patience, and reverence.

🌙 Trust the process. Honor the evolution. Weave your fate.

  • The Sacred Elixirs for Dreads: Choosing Wisely

The choice of elixirs to anoint your locks is a decision woven with great importance—one that even the most seasoned practitioners of dreadcraft may underestimate. Yet, knowledge is protection, and with the right wisdom, you shall navigate these waters with clarity.

🌿 Let this counsel serve as your guide, illuminating the path through the treacherous terrain of residue, buildup, and deception. Study well, for within these teachings lies the key to nurturing locks that remain pure, strong, and unburdened.

    🌊 The Water-Soluble Truth

In the realm of dreadlock care, embrace the ethos of simplicity—for in simplicity, there is power. A Viking’s wisdom is this: Only that which dissolves in water shall touch your locks.

🕯️ If it is not water-soluble, let it not weave itself into the strands of your fate.
🌀 If it lingers, if it coats, if it clings—banish it from your rituals.

Let your products be as pure as the mountain streams and as resilient as the shields forged for battle. For what you anoint your locks with today shall shape their strength, longevity, and energy in the moons to come.

Choose wisely. Trust the elements. Weave your locks with purity.

    🌿 Recommended Dreadcare Products

For those who seek tried and trusted potions, these artisans of dreadcraft offer elixirs worthy of your locks:

To tend to your dreadlocks is to tend to your journey—may you walk this path with wisdom, intention, and unwavering care.

  • The Sacred Path of Dreadlock Maintenance

Fellow seeker of the noble dreadlocks, listen well, for the beauty of this journey lies in the freedom to weave as much or as little maintenance into your locks as you desire. Each warrior of dreadcraft walks a path of their own choosing, and only you—guided by instinct, wisdom, and patience—can determine what resonates with your essence.

Yet, among the many roads to dreadlock mastery, there stands one unyielding truth—all must partake in the sacred act of separation! Ensure your warrior locks are kept separate by pulling away the dreads and loose hairs which have crossed over from neighbouring sections. This ensures you do not end up with matting.

    🌿 The Ritual of Cleansing

A second decree echoes through the halls of dreadlock wisdom—a ritual shared by every loctician, loctician-in-training, and dreadhead alike—the cleansing baptism of locks.

However, beware! Misinformation swirls like a restless wind, whispering myths of when and how to wash dreadlocks. If there be but one sacred teaching you hold close, let it be the truth of cleansing—for the health of your locks depends not only on the rhythm of your wash cycle, but also on the potions you bestow upon them.

⚔️ Tools of the Craft—Choose Wisely

In the vast expanse of maintenance methods, some wield mighty tools that serve one with valor but prove treacherous for another. Know this:

🌿 What strengthens one set of dreadlocks may weaken another.
🕯️ What works for the structured may not suit the freeform.
🌊 What cleanses one soul may burden another with residue.

Beware, for dangers lurk in the shadows of this realm—tools and techniques that may unravel progress or lead your locks astray.

🔮 Seek Knowledge, But Carve Your Own Path

Within these pages lies wisdom forged in the crucible of experience, passed down by those who have walked this path before. Yet, know this—no single source holds the absolute truth. Your dreadlocks, your journey, your fate—these are yours to shape.

🌙 Let this tome be your guide, but let your own hands weave the runes of understanding upon the stone of experience.

May your dreadlocks be as resilient as Viking shields and as pure as the mountain streams of the Norse realms.

✨ Skål to the wisdom sought, and the locks embraced on your dreadlocked voyage! ✨

  • Here are some DIY at home maintenance techniques readily available on YouTube that will help you tame your mane with your own hands-
    Dreadlock Maintenance Techniques

Maintenance mainly focuses on specific areas of the dreadlocks which need attention, such as the roots, loose hairs, or thinning sections, rather than working on the entire head. Over-maintaining your own dreads can cause damage so try not to be too heavy-handed with your tidy ups.

🧵 NEEDLE & THREAD – A repair method where a needle and thread are used to sew loose hairs back into the dreadlock or reinforce weak spots.

🔄 CLOCKWISE RUBBING / ROOT RUBBING – A method where the roots of the dreadlocks are rubbed in a circular motion against the scalp to help new growth knot up. Best suited for Afro-textured hair but can cause breakage in other hair types.

🖤 RUBBER BANDS – Used to hold sections in place before dreadlocks are fully formed. They can help control loose hair but must be removed after the locking process starts to avoid getting trapped inside the dread.

♻️ RE-BACKCOMBING – A technique used to re-tighten or reshape loose or weak areas of a dreadlock by backcombing the hair again and reinforcing it with crochet or palm rolling.

🧶 FELTING – A lesser-known method where a felting needle is used to push and compact hair together, similar to crocheting but with much finer control.

✂️ SEPARATING – One of the most important maintenance habits—gently pulling apart dreadlocks at the roots to prevent them from merging together.

🪡 CROCHET – Using a tiny crochet hook to pull in loose hairs and tighten dreadlocks from the inside, making them neat, compact, and strong.

🔗 LATCH HOOK / INTERLOCKING – A method that involves pulling the dreadlock through its own root loop, tightening new growth. Best suited for Afro-textured hair but can create weak spots in straighter textures.

💦 WASHING – The foundation of healthy dreadlocks! Using residue-free shampoo to cleanse the scalp and locks, keeping them fresh, strong, and free from buildup.

👐 PALM ROLLING – A technique where dreadlocks are rolled between the palms to smooth out bumps, help new knots form, and encourage a uniform shape over time.

✨ Each technique serves a purpose, and the best maintenance routine depends on your hair type, method of locking, and personal preference. Choose wisely, and let your dreadcraft evolve with care and intention! 🌿🔮

  • How to Repair Dreadlocks 🔧✨

Over time, dreadlocks may experience thinning, weak spots, unraveling, or breakage—but fear not! With the right techniques, you can restore strength, structure, and longevity to your locks.

    Common Dreadlock Repairs & Solutions

    🔹 Weak or Thinning Roots
    🛠️ Method: Root Reinforcement
🔗 Solution: Crochet loose hairs back into the root or thread in extensions to strengthen weak areas.

🔹 Thinning or Weak Spots in the Middle
    🛠️ Method: Dread Bandaid
🔗 Solution: Gather a small strand of hair (check your old hair brush or order human hair from a reliable supplier) and create a hair ball by rubbing it between your hands. Wrap this hair ball around the weak spot, and use a crochet hook to gently secure it in place which will reinforce the dreadlock's structure.

🔹 Splitting or Loosening at the Ends
    🛠️ Method: Backcombing & Felting
🔗 Solution: Re-backcomb the loose hair and use a crochet hook to secure the ends.

    🔹 Dreadlocks Merging Together
    🛠️ Method: Careful Separation
🔗 Solution: Gently pull the dreadlocks apart at the root. If they are too merged, use scissors to carefully separate them, then palm roll and reinforce with crochet if needed.

🔹 Dreads That Have Snapped or Broken Off
    🛠️ Method: Reattachment with Extension
🔗 Solution: Crochet the broken dreadlock back onto the base using a crochet hook by reattaching it as you would with extensions.

🔹 Loose Hair Around the Dreads
🛠️ Method: Crochet Hook / Palm Rolling
🔗 Solution: Use a small crochet hook to pull in stray hairs or palm roll the dread to smooth and encourage uniformity.

⚡ Pro Tips for Maintaining Strong Dreadlocks

✔️ Separate your dreadlocks regularly to prevent unwanted merging.
✔️ Avoid over-maintenance, as excessive crocheting or interlocking can weaken hair over time.
✔️ Use a residue-free shampoo to keep hair healthy and buildup-free.
✔️ Hydrate & strengthen your locks with natural dread oils if your hair is prone to dryness.

✨ With patience and the right techniques, your dreadlocks can remain strong, resilient, and woven with purpose. 🖤🌿

  • How to Remove Dreadlocks ✂️✨

Dreadlocks are a commitment, but they’re not always permanent—they can be removed or undone with patience and the right techniques. How you remove them depends on how long you've had them, their maturity, and the method used to create them.

🖤 1. COMBING OUT DREADLOCKS (For Those Who Want to Keep Their Hair)

If your dreadlocks are not fully matured (less than a year old), or if you're willing to put in the time, you can remove them easily without shaving or cutting. Any older than this, you can still brush out but it will take much longer.

    Supplies Needed:
🔹 A deep conditioner or oil (coconut, olive, or dreadlock removal spray)
🔹 A metal fine-tooth comb or dread comb
🔹 A spray bottle with warm water & conditioner mix
    🔹 Lots of patience

    Step-by-Step Process:
1️⃣ Soak Your Dreadlocks – Saturate your locks with warm water and conditioner/oil to soften the knots.
2️⃣ Start from the Tips – Using a fine-tooth comb, gently pick apart the ends of the dread.
3️⃣ Work Slowly Upward – Keep spraying and detangling as you move toward the root.
4️⃣ Repeat & Deep Condition – This process can take hours or days, depending on the length and tightness of your dreadlocks.

    Time Required:

    • Shorter/looser dreads: A few hours

    • Long, mature dreads: Several days (work in sections)

💡 Pro Tip: Some people alternate between cutting off a portion of the dread and combing out the rest to save time!

    ✂️ 2. CUTTING DREADLOCKS OFF

For a faster removal method, cutting your dreadlocks off is the most efficient choice.

    Options:
🔹 Shave it all off – A fresh start, often chosen for simplicity.
🔹 Cut and comb out the remaining length – If you want to keep some length, cut halfway up the dreads, then comb out the rest using the first method.

    Time Required:

    • Cutting takes minutes

    • Cutting + combing can take a few hours

    🌿 3. DREADLOCK REMOVAL TREATMENTS

Some salons and locticians offer professional dreadlock removal or dematting services, where they use special detangling solutions to help loosen the knots more efficiently.

💡 If you don’t want to do it yourself, this is a great option!

🌀 4. LETTING DREADLOCKS UNRAVEL (Neglect Method)

For freeform dreads, some people stop maintaining them and let them naturally loosen over time.

🔹 This works best for younger, loosely-formed dreads, but it can take months for them to fully unravel.

⚠️ THINGS TO EXPECT AFTER REMOVAL

    • Hair Shedding – You will lose a lot of hair—this is normal! Your hair naturally sheds daily, but in dreadlocks, it gets trapped inside instead of falling out.

    • Dry or Damaged Hair – After years of being locked, your hair may feel dry, weak, or fragile—deep conditioning and trimming split ends will help restore it.

    • Scalp Sensitivity – Your scalp will feel lighter and possibly tender for a few days after removal.

Which Method Is Right for You?

✔ Want to keep your length?Combing out
✔ Want quick removal?Cutting or shaving
✔ Need professional help?Dread removal treatments
✔ Have loose, freeform dreads?Let them unravel naturally

Whichever method you choose, embrace the next chapter of your hair journey with wisdom and care! 🖤🌿

  • The Sacred Weaving of Dreadcraft: Restoring the Strength of Your Lokks

Even the mightiest of dreadlocks may face trials along their journey. A skilled weaver of dreadcraft (loctician) can aid in times of need, but for those who seek to restore their locks with their own hands, here are the most common dreadlock challenges and their remedies—a guide to fortifying your fate-woven strands.

    🌿 Loose Hair

⚠️ The Issue: Strands escaping from the locks, disrupting their woven structure.
🔮 The Remedy: Use a fine crochet hook to gently weave loose hairs back into the lock. Work with care, for excessive force may cause tension at the roots.

    🌀 Frizz & Flyaways

⚠️ The Issue: Unruly strands and a halo of frizz, interfering with the sleekness of your lokks.
    🔮 The Remedy:
✨ A crochet hook may be used to tuck stray hairs into their rightful place.
Palm rolling helps smooth and guide their formation.
✨ Apply a light mist of rose water, aloe vera, or a water-based gel—nothing heavy, lest residue befall your dreadcraft.

    🕯️ Thinning or Breakage

⚠️ The Issue: Weak spots forming, dreadlocks breaking—particularly at the tips.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🔹 Trim severely damaged ends to prevent further unraveling.
🔹 Avoid excessive tightening, over-maintenance, or tension-heavy styles—strength comes from patience, not force.
🔹 Keep a balanced maintenance schedule:

    • Mature dreadlocks – Every 3-6 months

    • Baby dreadlocks – Every 6 weeks

Too much manipulation weakens the structure—honor the rhythm of your locks.

    🔗 Cannibal Lokks (Merging Dreadlocks)

⚠️ The Issue: Two or more locks entwining without consent, seeking to merge into one.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🔹 Separate gently—use your fingers to stretch, twist, and pull them apart.
🔹 Maintain root separation—allowing each lock to follow its own destined path.

    🔥 Itchy Scalp

⚠️ The Issue: Dryness, product buildup, or an irritated scalp adjusting to dreadcraft.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🌊 Wash with a residue-free shampoo at least once a week.
🌿 Apply essential oils (tea tree, rosemary, peppermint) to calm and cleanse.
🌊 Saltwater immersion (a swim in the ocean) is a natural purifier—let the sea weave its magic.
🛑 Avoid scratching—for agitation leads only to further irritation.

💀 Mold or Mildew (The Dreaded Rot)

⚠️ The Issue: A damp, musty scent or visible discoloration caused by trapped moisture.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🛡️ Preventative Measures: Always dry your dreadlocks fully after washing—do not leave them to linger in moisture’s grasp.
🧴 Detox Method: A diluted apple cider vinegar soak may help cleanse and remove mildew. If the issue persists, seek the guidance of a seasoned loctician.

    🧪 Product Buildup

⚠️ The Issue: A heavy, waxy, or flaky residue forming inside the dreadlocks.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🔹 Use a clarifying, residue-free shampoo to flush out buildup.
🔹 A baking soda + apple cider vinegar soak may aid in deep purification.
🛑 Avoid commercial conditioners, waxes, or silicone-based products—they weave only ruin within your locks.

    🌀 Unraveling Dreadlocks

⚠️ The Issue: Loose sections, unraveling ends, or dreadlock extensions weakening.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🔹 Use a crochet hook + palm rolling to guide them back into form.
🔹 If severely unraveled, consult a dreadlock artisan to reweave them.
🛑 Beware the false ways—the trend of "twist & seal" dreadlocks is an illusion! These are not true locks, but merely synthetic fibers twisted and melted together, falling apart within mere days.

    🕯️ Scalp Tenderness

⚠️ The Issue: Sensitivity, soreness, or tension at the roots.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🌊 Ensure your hair is washed and fully dried to avoid scalp discomfort.
🛡️ Avoid tight styles that pull at the roots.
🌿 Massage your scalp gently with nourishing oils to soothe and restore balance.

    🎨 Color Fading

⚠️ The Issue: Dyed dreadlocks losing vibrancy.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🌑 Protect from excessive sun exposure—UV rays are thieves of color.
    🌊 Wash with color-safe, residue-free shampoos.
❄️ Rinse hair in cold water—heat accelerates fading.
🔹 Periodic color touch-ups may be necessary to maintain intensity.

    🪨 Hard or Brittle Lokks

⚠️ The Issue: Dreadlocks becoming dry, stiff, or rough to the touch.
    🔮 The Remedy:
🌿 Hydrate with light natural oils (argan, jojoba, vitamin E).
🛑 Avoid heavy products—moisturize wisely, for buildup will do you no favors.
✨ Let the elements work their magic—saltwater tightens, sunlight strengthens, and time refines.

🌙 Weaving Strength Back into Your Lokks

Your dreadlocks are woven threads of time, patience, and care. When challenges arise, meet them with wisdom and intention.

🌿 Tend to your locks as you would a sacred craft.
🌙 Honor the process, for each lock carries your journey within it.

May your dreadcraft remain strong, your fate ever-weaving, and your lokks stand resilient against time.

    LOKKR ON.

  • The Wheel of Dreadcraft: Seasonal Rites for Lokks of Strength & Wisdom

Hail, keeper of the woven path! As the seasons turn, so too must your rituals of dreadlock care evolve. Each shift in nature mirrors the journey of your locks—a cycle of renewal, endurance, and transformation. Honor the elements, heed their lessons, and let your dreadcraft thrive in harmony with the turning wheel of time.

    🌱 SPRING – THE AWAKENING

    🌿 Ritual of Cleansing
As the world awakens from slumber, so too must your locks be cleansed of winter’s weight. Use a purifying, residue-free shampoo to refresh and invigorate your lokks, welcoming the season of renewal.

    💧 The Gift of Hydration
Spring carries new life—so nourish your dreadlocks as you would fresh earth. Light, water-based elixirs, rose water, or botanical oils shall keep them resilient and full of vitality.

🌧 Shield Against the Weeping Skies
The rains of spring may bless the land, but they need not linger in your locks. Keep them covered beneath a hood or cloak, lest dampness invite unwanted spirits of mildew.

☀️ SUMMER – THE SUNLIT JOURNEY

🔥 Guardians Against the Sun’s Wrath
The fiery gaze of the sun is both a giver of life and a thief of moisture. Protect your dreadlocks from UV exposure, especially if they are color-treated. Wear a scarf, hat, or head wrap when the sun burns too fiercely.

    💦 The Ritual of Hydration
In the heat of battle (and summer), your scalp and locks thirst for moisture. Mist them with cool water, anoint them with light oils, and drink deeply to nourish them from within.

🌊 The Call of the Ocean
Saltwater is a sacred ally of dreadlocks—swim freely in the sea, for its touch tightens and cleanses naturally. But beware the bewitchment of chlorine—rinse your locks with fresh water before and after swimming in pools to prevent chemical residue.

    🍂 AUTUMN – HARVESTING STRENGTH

    🍃 Purification of the Old
As the leaves fall, so too must any remnants of summer be cleansed from your locks. Wash away sweat, dust, and oils that linger, preparing your dreadlocks for the cooling winds ahead.

🍁 The Ritual of Strengthening Oils
The dry winds of autumn demand a change in your alchemy—infuse your locks with richer oils to keep them supple and fortified. Argan, jojoba, and castor oil shall guard against the creeping grasp of brittleness.

    🍂 Shielding from the Winds
Autumn’s gales bring stories of the coming frost—but they also bring tangles and dryness. Wrap your dreadlocks in fabric befitting their majesty, protecting them from the season’s bite.

    ❄️ WINTER – A COZY HEARTH

    🛑 The Washing Restraint
Winter’s chill is harsh upon the scalp—ease the frequency of washing to preserve your natural oils. Let your locks rest, embracing the warmth of the hearth as nature slumbers.

    🧴 The Deep Winter Hydration
The air is dry, biting, and unforgiving—thus, your dreadlocks crave deep nourishment. Bestow upon them heavier oils and conditioning masks (but beware of residue). A balance must be found, lest your locks become burdened with excess.

    🌙 YEAR-ROUND WISDOM

    🔮 Tending to the Weave
Through all seasons, seek the counsel of a skilled dread weaver (loctician), who shall guide your maintenance, strengthening, and evolution. Regular gatherings every 3-6 moons shall ensure your locks remain steadfast through time.

    🌀 Adaptation to the Elements
As the seasons shift, so too must your potions. Lighter mists and oils for warmth, richer elixirs for the frost—a dance of balance with the changing elements.

    👑 Scalp Reverence
Your scalp is the throne from which your locks descend—honor it well. Massage it regularly, tend to its needs, and allow it to breathe, for a strong foundation ensures an enduring legacy.

🌿 May Your Locks Flow With the Seasons, Woven in Strength & Wisdom

Time turns, the seasons wax and wane, yet your dreadlocks remain a living testament to your journey. Honor their evolution, walk in rhythm with nature, and embrace the magick of each passing phase.

    ✨ LOKK ON! ✨

  • The Art of Adornment: Weaving Magick Into Your Lokks

Picture yourself standing atop an ancient cliffside, the wind weaving through your locks like the threads of fate itself. Below, the ocean roars—a song of time, transformation, and the sacred journey of dreadcraft.

Your locks are more than hair—they are woven sigils of your path, a reflection of your spirit, wisdom, and strength. And like the seers and mystics of old, you may adorn them with symbols of protection, power, and personal legend.

🌙 Beads as Symbols of Fate

Much like the threads of destiny spun by the Norns, each bead upon your locks is a marker of your journey—a memory, a lesson, a triumph.

✨ Carve them with runes of strength and guidance.
✨ Choose materials that speak to your essence—bone, wood, metal, or stone.
✨ Let each bead be a silent storyteller, whispering of your past and lighting the way forward.

🌀 Wraps & Braids: The Weaving of Magick

To braid is to bind intention into form, and to wrap is to protect and empower.

🔹 Silken wraps hold the energy of patience and grace.
🔹 Leather braids mirror the unyielding resilience of those who walk their own path.
🔹 Threads of gold or silver weave prosperity, intuition, and clarity into your locks.

Each twist, each turn, is a spell in motion—a living talisman crafted with your own hands.

🔮 Runes & Charms: The Language of the Divine

Etched into beads, carved into metal, or woven into fabric, runes and symbols call forth the energies of the universe.

    🕯️ Algiz (ᛉ) – Protection & Higher Guidance
    🌀 Eiwaz (ᛇ) – Transformation & Growth
    🔥 Tiwaz (ᛏ) – Strength & Honor

Let these symbols serve as anchors to your power, reminders of your inner knowing as you navigate the world.

🌊 A Beacon in the Darkness

One day, when your locks have woven years of wisdom into their form, they will stand as a testament to the journey you have taken. Not just aesthetic adornment, but a living ritual, a woven spell of fate, strength, and resilience.

For in this world—as in the unseen realms—it is not just the battles we fight, but the way we weave ourselves into our own legend that defines us.

Adorn your locks with intention. Weave your story with purpose. Step into your own magick.
